Each download server is listed separately, labelled with the algorithm used — SHA-256, or MD5 for files we have not re-hashed yet. Compare against the server you actually downloaded from: a match means the download arrived intact, a mismatch means it was corrupted on the way and is worth downloading again. This checks for corruption in storage or transfer. It tells you your copy matches ours — it is not a statement about whether the file itself is safe to open. MD5 is also weak against a file deliberately built to collide with another, which is why we are moving to SHA-256.
